You will focus on the study, testing and application of the guiding principles and processes associated with graphic design, with three main points of focus – typography, creative method and general principles of visual communication.

Visual media create the atmosphere and aesthetics that shape and determine how we navigate our world. This means that we as visual practitioners are responsible for the socio-political shaping of our lives and the lives of others. You will think critically about how our world is created and how we work together in relationships, communities and assemblies, and you will question visual culture and communication practices from a global perspective.
This unit explores the critical, creative and technical thinking skills you need when working with large amounts of text. You will develop an awareness of the many interpretive possibilities of even simple texts by experimenting with typographic display and arrangement, while learning the knowledge and techniques necessary for editorial design and ‘exploring the opportunities and challenges of working internationally.
You will experience design, narrative and order as thematic concepts that can be applied to screen-based results. You will be asked to consider how visual language such as words, images, form and structure can support communication. The unit will also introduce key principles of graphic identity by asking you to consider the role of a designer in producing digital outcomes.
You will dive deeper into the working world of the professional designer and the creative user. The main aim is to help prepare you for work and postgraduate experience and to allow you to explore the world of current graphic design practice in a range of related industries and related career paths.

As a practitioner in the creative professions, you need in-depth knowledge of the sector and the ability to work within it. You will focus on applying the knowledge and theoretical skills you have acquired in previous years of study to working life, and you will have opportunities to gain a deep understanding of the creative industries.
If you choose to complete a year of professional practice, this takes place in year three. You will undertake an internship within the creative industries to develop your skills and CV.
While you are on your professional practice year, you will pay a lower tuition fee for that year. This fee will be determined using state aid rules. Based on the current rules, we expect this to be a maximum of 20% of your stated tuition fee rate for your second year of study. You will also receive additional travel and accommodation costs this year. The University will provide you with further advice and guidance on this as you approach your professional practice year.
Please note: If you are an international applicant, you must register for the course ‘with one year of professional practice’. It will not be possible to transfer to the Professional year after registration
