If you want to publish a book in an online store, you need to purchase a template for your book. The template design supports a graphic designer’s e-book portfolio. One thing that holds many people back when it comes to self-publishing is the overall design and format of the finished book. Paying an eBook designer is expensive, so I aim to create simple and beautiful templates so you can quickly create your eBook on a budget.

Not only do they showcase your design skills, but they also show who you are as a creative/critical thinker and convey to potential employers what you have to offer. Building your portfolio is important, so here are my top tips for building a great portfolio.

*The link at the end of the post contains my latest personal portfolio and the ISSUU stack, which is a collection of my favorite portfolios that I’ve found.

1. White space is your friend. Allowing your pages to breathe is essential for readability. Don’t try to put every design on one spread. It’s okay if your portfolio gets a little longer so that each of your designs is big enough and easy to read. Don’t be afraid to have the image cover the entire spread if it helps with readability. Note the use of spaces in the spreads below. Treat negative white space as an object in your compositions that draws the viewer’s attention to the most important element of the spread.

2. You have a short period of time to make a big impression. Include only your best work and keep it in 3-5 projects, starting with your best and ending with your second best, as people often remember what they saw first and last. For this reason, you want what people remember to be your best and second best work. If you feel you want to include an older project, don’t be afraid to go back and update it a bit. You want all of your projects to experience roughly the same level of resolution in your files.

3. Include creative work outside of architectural projects. Photography, drawing, painting, hobbies, publishing, web and graphic design, etc. are great for showcasing a well-rounded designer.

4. Once you’ve chosen your projects, it’s time to organize them in a way that highlights each project’s strengths and your design expertise. There are several ways to organize your portfolio.

3) Project Category (Architecture, Interior, Landscape, City, Graphics, Industrial, etc.) (this is what I used in my last file).

There are many other ways that I haven’t even mentioned, but chronological is often the worst way. Avoid this! Think more strategically about how your projects are laid out so you don’t fall into the lazy presentation trap of “And then I did this, and then I did that.”

Also think about how your content page looks. Is it easy to navigate your portfolio? Does anyone know when they’ve finished looking at one project and started looking at another? Add title pages and category pages so you can easily search your portfolio. In digital portfolios, you can take wayfinding to the next level by adding navigation links that allow the viewer to go directly to a specific page or project. Very handy if your portfolio gets as long as my last one (which was actually 2 portfolios stuck in one lol). A link to my latest file and a link to the front cover, table of contents and even an external animated video linked here. You can do this using ISSUU’s publication editing tools, or even in InDesign using buttons and bookmarks to create interactive PDFs.

5. Keep it simple and use no more than two fonts. My favorite fonts, Abel, Trade Gothic LT Std, Roboto, Avenir LT Std. What fonts do you regularly use in your projects? Use these.

6. Use wood in MESH and fields to create strong compositions. Keep the text away from the edges of the page as they may be cut off during the printing and binding process. Make sure your design and text are aligned. Be very careful if you break the composition grid. Here’s a link to a fantastic animated video that demonstrates layout and composition best practices from GCFLearnFree.org.

7. Take large, high-quality photos of your model and place them in your portfolio. Consider how the background of the photo affects your composition.

8. DO NOT take pictures of your hand drawings. Instead, scan them and edit them in Photoshop to get rid of the paper background. If necessary, use a Black and White adjustment layer to remove the color. Then use the Levels adjustment layer to separate the drawings from the paper. If you’ve achieved the look below with the Black & White and Levels adjustment layer, then you’re golden, but if you still can’t get rid of the paper texture behind without compromising the design, then the Magic Wand drawing highlights the drawn marks Create a mask from the selection and edit as needed to get the look below.

9. Strategically incorporate process drawings and/or model studies into project deployment. Potential employers are looking for quality technology work along with your final designs and renderings.

10. Don’t be afraid to go back and update your old projects. You have more skills now than when you created them. Portfolios are designed to showcase your current skills. Below are some images on the left from version 3 of the portfolio and on the right from version 4 of the portfolio. (Yes, I call my portfolios “versions” because I’ve been updating them every year since my 3rd year of architecture school. Don’t @ me lol but seriously, in your design career, starting a portfolio early is a great way to see how you’ve progressed as a designer. All past “versions” of the portfolio are available on my ISSUU page.) If you need tutorials on how to improve your design, check out the You’re Doing It Wrong tutorial series on YouTube. There are tons of tutorials from Photoshop to SoundCloud and more!

11. Start thinking about your brand. Create a logo and define your visual style. What is your favorite color and what does it say about you? How can you incorporate this color as an organizing element in your portfolio?

12. Choose the paper size that works best for ALL of your jobs. Should it be a portrait, landscape or square portfolio? Find a bunch of your favorite books, publications, and sketchbooks that you like and measure them for size. Copy the size of your favorite. Think about how big the portfolio will be once fully distributed. This is especially important if you are using a landscape portfolio. Any paper larger than 8.5 x 11 (11 x 17 open) should be avoided as they become bulky to carry. Try the following dimensions to start with, then modify them to fit your specific file (add 0.25, 0.5, or 0.75 inches to any size as needed):

13. Depending on the submission requirements, you may be asked to submit work samples that are one-page previews of your designs rather than a fully complete portfolio. In this case, the convenience of printing is important. Consider using an 8.5 x 11 or 11 x 17 size for these work samples so that your potential employer can print them if necessary. Remember that this is a summary or highlights, so include only the most important projects for a sample work page. You can add a link
